Creative Writing 2017
End of the Year Relection
In my senior year, I took Creative Writing. I learned more about my writing style aside from writing essays in my regular English Classes. I learned more about my writing style. I found out that greatly enjoy writing love stories and action scenes through writing my journals on Weebly. Learned more about literature through the pieces we read such as Kurt Vonnegut, Ray Bradbury, and Edgar Allan Poe. They each had such different ways of writing. Vonnegut gave me a view of waiting and love. Bradbury gave me a view that humankind was going to ruin the future in mass destruction. Poe gave me a really creepy and horror feel in his writing. I also realized, that we all really struggle with something no matter our age. We all enjoy literature in our own way.
The developing of myself as a writer in this class gave me quite a perspective. Since Freshman year, I have improved, changed, and gained experience. I learned what genre I enjoyed writing in my journals, writing, and even in my vocabulary. I have grown in my grammar and in my plots of my stories. I’ve used my weaknesses in order to grow as a writer. I learned that I have increased my abilities as a writer with my reading. The more I read, the more I learned and focused on the Literary devices (Tricks of the Trade). I know I still struggle, but I am learning them slowly. I’ve grown to enjoy poetry, even though I didn’t at first. I learned I could actually read, write and connect with poetry. I’ve grown in the way I use grammar, even though I know I still struggle.
My goals and aspirations as a writer are to keep getting better with my grammar. I hope to keep gaining a larger vocabulary. I hope to still have creative ideas for my writing in the future. What I’ve learned from my reading is that having a strong independent women is a book makes it more interesting (Mr. & Mrs. Smith). I also really enjoy humor and try to incorporate in into my writing (Seafoam). Incorporating what I read into my poetry and reading it was quite hard. I don’t really read much poetry. It really isn’t my first choice to read and write, but I really liked that I could write a poem and people could read it and use it to connect with their life. I really enjoy the poems that have a lot of metaphors and similes.
The feedback I got from classmate made me notice that I write with lots of detail and not a lot of dialogue. My peers told me to try to get more out of my comfort zone and try more dialogue. After getting that feedback; I started trying to use more in my writing journals. When I was writing my Child’s story. My friend, Lexi Hansen, helped me with details and gathered more complex words to make the little boy seem like a genius. It was quite hard to conjure ideas that would be in a young child’s head. I had about 4 drafts till I had something I really liked. I also really struggled writing about the death of my horse. I was told ‘to write about what you know’. So that is what I did. My friends really enjoy my view and it helped me be able to write more about pain and love. The feelings about me reading aloud didn’t really affect me on a large level. It may not be my favorite thing, but it’s something one has to do in the real world. I had a small feeling of being judged, but I blocked out and did it. I wasn’t the keen on it, but it really didn’t change over the semester or anything. I wish I could of been more prepared for the journals, but otherwise, I wouldn’t change a thing. I worked my tail off in this class.
Mrs. Szczembara, I would ask you not to change a thing. Keep making the students read different works! Keep making them read aloud! Keep making them work on Tricks of the Trade, Poetry, and other professional works. I really enjoyed this class and had a blast! Please, keep writing and giving the students examples. I really liked that you did the works with us in order to give us examples! You are an amazing teacher and thank you for making this class so fun to be in!
